May Day!!

On Tuesday, May 1, 2007, in honor of International Workers' Day and in solidarity with immigrants and laborers everywhere:

We, the May Day Working Group, and the people of Poughkeepsie will participate in this international day of action. We are celebrating the spirit of unity that first brought together the shared struggles of workers and immigrants here in the United States in 1886. By doing so, we also recognize that these struggles for dignified living conditions and basic human rights continue to this day. Finally, in addition to fostering a sense of solidarity, we hope to connect the diverse voices and concerns of the people of Poughkeepsie with the greater civil rights and immigration rights movements.

A series of peaceful and educational events have been planned in Poughkeepsie. Workshops are scheduled at Poughkeepsie High School between 2:45 pm - 4:00 pm. At 3:00 pm there will be a rally at Vassar College to call attention to May Day on campus. Another rally will take place at the field behind the Family Partnership Center, 29 North Hamilton Street at 4:30 pm. The rally will focus on a range of issues concerning labor. These contradictions and complexities from history must be addressed. We all can participate in recognizing our efforts at community building and labor, as well as approaching these issues on May 1st 2007.
